📐 SGPA & CGPA Formulas — Nepal (All Universities)

Formula 1 — Calculate SGPA (Semester GPA)
SGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Example: Math (A, 3CH) + Physics (B+, 3CH) + English (A-, 3CH) + Nepali (B, 4CH) = (4.0×3 + 3.3×3 + 3.7×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 13 = (12+9.9+11.1+12) ÷ 13 = 3.46 SGPA
Formula 2 — Calculate CGPA from Multiple Semesters
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(All Credit Hours)
Sem1: 3.2 SGPA × 15 CH = 48.0 Sem2: 3.6 SGPA × 15 CH = 54.0 Sem3: 3.4 SGPA × 18 CH = 61.2 CGPA = (48.0 + 54.0 + 61.2) ÷ 48 = 3.40 CGPA = 85%
Formula 3 — Convert CGPA to Percentage
Percentage = CGPA × 25
3.4 CGPA × 25 = 85% 3.6 CGPA × 25 = 90% 3.0 CGPA × 25 = 75%

📋 How to Calculate CGPA Step by Step

1
Find your SGPA for each semesterYour SGPA is printed on each semester's marksheet. If not, calculate it using Tab 1 of our calculator above.
2
Note total credit hours per semesterEach semester has a set number of credit hours (typically 15–21 credits). Your marksheet shows this. Common: 15 CH for first semesters, 18–21 CH for later semesters.
3
Multiply SGPA × Credit Hours for each semesterSem1: 3.2 × 15 = 48.0 Sem2: 3.6 × 18 = 64.8
4
Add all products, divide by total credit hoursCGPA = (48.0 + 64.8) ÷ 33 = 3.42
5
Convert to percentage3.42 × 25 = 85.5% — write this on job applications and scholarship forms.
💡 If you don't know your credit hours: Most Nepali universities use 15–18 credit hours per semester for bachelor's programs. TU BBS and BSc typically have 15 CH/semester. KU and PU engineering programs often have 18–21 CH/semester. Check your academic calendar or ask your faculty office.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA in Nepal?

Use the formula: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credit hours, sum them all, then divide by total credits. Use Tab 2 of our calculator above for instant results.

What is SGPA in Nepal universities?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your GPA for one semester only. It's calculated as: SGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours for that semester. Your final degree shows CGPA, not SGPA.

What CGPA is Distinction in TU Nepal?

In Tribhuvan University (TU), Distinction starts at 3.30 CGPA (82.5%). This is different from PU and KU, where Distinction requires 3.60 CGPA (90%). TU's lower threshold reflects its older percentage-based tradition.

What CGPA is Distinction in PU, KU, PBU?

In Pokhara University (PU), Kathmandu University (KU), and Purbanchal University (PBU), Distinction requires 3.60 CGPA (90%) for undergraduate programs. PU requires 3.75 CGPA for postgraduate Distinction.

How to convert CGPA to percentage in Nepal?

Multiply your CGPA by 25. Percentage = CGPA × 25. Example: 3.4 CGPA × 25 = 85%. This is the standard formula accepted by TU, PU, KU, and PBU for job applications, Lok Sewa, and foreign university admissions.

Is CGPA or SGPA shown on the degree certificate?

Your final degree certificate shows CGPA — the cumulative average across all semesters. Individual semester SGPAs appear on your semester marksheets. For job applications and graduate school admissions, always use your CGPA, not individual SGPAs.

What is the minimum CGPA to graduate in Nepal?

Minimum graduation CGPA varies: TU generally requires 35% (Third Division). PU requires minimum 2.0 CGPA for undergraduates and 3.0 CGPA for postgraduates. KU requires minimum 2.0 CGPA. Check your specific program requirements as some faculties have higher thresholds.

Can I improve my CGPA in the final semester?

Yes! Use our Target CGPA Planner (Tab 3 of the calculator above) to find exactly what SGPA you need next semester. Note: the more credit hours completed, the harder it is to move CGPA significantly. Final semester CGPA improvement is possible but limited.
